How to Import Articles from Google Docs to WordPress?

To begin with, you have to install an add-on/plugin for Google Docs.

Here is the description of the add-on:

Compose a document in Google Docs and send it directly to any WordPress.com or Jetpack powered WordPress.org site as a draft post.
Instead of copying and pasting from Google Docs to WordPress and losing your images and formatting in the process, this add-on makes it easy to compose in Google Docs and publish to WordPress with formatting intact and images being uploaded properly.

After installing the add-on, you’ll be able to open WordPress.com for Google Docs in any Google Doc and connect your sites.

On the next page, you will get the option to connect the add-on with your WordPress account.

Here, you will be taken to the login page of your WordPress blog to complete authorization

  • Login to your WordPress account in the page that opens up

When I tried it, I got an error as follows:

Someone may be trying to trick you into giving them access to your site. Or it could be you just encountered a bug :). Either way, please close this window.

I chose to ignore it. To stop the error from popping up, I cleared cache from my server and WordPress, and tried logging in again. You can use Jetpack debugging tool if the problem persists.

Another common error observed is this:

There was a problem getting your site’s information. Please make sure you have the Jetpack JSON API enabled, and try re-adding it.

You can fix it by going into Jetpack > Settings on your WordPress Dashboard and Enable JSON API. Check out the following image.

Let’s go back to Google Docs. Refresh the page and now you will see your WordPress account on the right with a button that says Save Draft or Update Draft. Every time you click on it, the content from the Google Doc will be updated to your WordPress account. With one click now content from your Google Docs will be moved to WordPress account. And that is not all, you can connect multiple WordPress account to you Google Docs and update multiple websites from a single Google Docs account. All you have to do is click on Add WordPress Site that you see on the footer.

Some things to keep in mind

  • Any edits, such as cropping and rotating, done on the image within Google Docs will not reflect in the WordPress draft
    • It is better to make changes on the images before adding them in Google Docs.
  • Comments added in Google Docs will not reflect in the draft
    • This is actually good. Comments are for internal purpose anyway
  • If you have saved the draft with an image and then you remove the image and update the draft, the image would have gone from the draft in WordPress, but the image stays in your database
    • You can manually delete the image from the Media tab in your WordPress dashboard

I will rate this add-on a 8/10. It reduces a little effort for sure for me and my team. And I am certain that the creators will add more features in the near future to make it a 10/10.

Isn’t that awesome? Sharing this on Facebook or with your colleagues will do no harm to you but it will certainly get you some appreciation from them. You can share it now 🙂
