Wikipedia defines Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the intelligence that is exhibited by Machines. In a way, Artificial Intelligence is a simulation of Human Intelligence.

Today’s Artificial Intelligence is tomorrow’s taken for granted.

This comes from Microsoft Corporate VP for Microsoft AI & Research Group Andrew Shuman. He was setting the stage for the significance of Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft’s annual Build developer’s conference, this week.

The recent surge in the developments of Artificial Intelligence has created an AI landrush. We see every tech company seizing the opportunity to do more in machine learning and cognitive computing.

Microsoft has been in the artificial intelligence for a very long time now. We might consider AI to be Watson parent IBM or Elon Musk or Amazon or even Facebook. But Microsoft is one of the only two companies that has created a search engine which uses a lot of AI – Bing.

During the Build’s conference, last year, it was all about AI chat bots. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft,  promised that everything from Skype to HoloLens would be AI built. During his keynote he declared

Bots are the new apps

During the same time, Microsoft had launched its own Twitter chatbot, named Tay. However, it was a disaster and had to be pulled down within 12 hours after it started tweeting racist remarks. In an official statement regarding Tay, Microsoft had said,

“The AI chatbot Tay is a machine learning project, designed for human engagement. It is as much a social and cultural experiment, as it is technical. Unfortunately, within the first 24 hours of coming online, we became aware of a coordinated effort by some users to abuse Tay’s commenting skills to have Tay respond in inappropriate ways. As a result, we have taken Tay offline and are making adjustments.”

Tay did learn in less than 24 hours how snarky Millennials could be!

For the year 2017, as the Build Conference kicks off on May 10 in Seattle, Artificial Intelligence is supposedly going to be less flashy. However, the conference is more focused on how mining data can be useful to get useful and actionable insights along with subtle intelligence.

Elaborating this further Shuman said, “If I think about the kind of AI revolution that’s going on, it’s very much created by a new increase in data being available and cloud service being able to run millions of computations.”

Well, thanks to 100 million Office 365 subscribers, Microsoft does have data along with its cloud service OneDrive. That’s certainly the kind of information that can power impressive Artificial Intelligence feats.

The difference in Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence and others is that Microsoft isn’t in your face. They are like anonymous factory robot, zipping through the aisle fetching you things that you didn’t even know wanted.

For ex, in PowerPoint (in Office 365), the Quick Starter uses AI to help find the right template based on a single word you type into one of the slides. While behind the scenes, it looks for the vast well of structured Bing Data.
